Armchair BEA: Introductions 2013

Armchair BEA is a blogging event for those of us who can't make it out to New York.   If you want to participate in today's activity, just answer five of these questions.  My answers are below, but please feel free to ask me anything in the comments.  Let's get to know each other!

1.  Please tell us a little bit about yourself: Who are you? How long have you been blogging? Why did you get into blogging?

See last year's answer.  The main difference is that I now have a full-time job as a technical writer.  Oddly, I don't actually write anything.  I mostly copyedit and beg people for graphics plans.

2.  Where in the world are you blogging from? Tell a random fact or something special about your current location. Feel free to share pictures.

I am blogging from Houston, which I moved to in late April for a job.  Houston is a fantastic town for food, especially seafood.  I have previously blogged from Austin, Fort Worth, New York City, and Oxford, England.

3.  Have you previously participated in Armchair BEA? What brought you back for another year? If you have not previously participated, what drew you to the event?

Last year was the first year that I participated in Armchair BEA.  You can read my 2012 posts here.   I'm back because I had tons of fun - I met lots of new bloggers, got to spread the word about some fabulous books, and won some cool stuff.

In The Shadow of Blackbirds 4.  What are you currently reading, or what is your favorite book you have read so far in 2013?

I am currently reading UNSTICKY by Sarra Manning, on the recommendation of Angie.  My overall favorite of the year so far is IN THE SHADOW OF BLACKBIRDS by Cat Winters (review).  In close second is THE SWEETEST DARK by Shana Abé (review), which I actually read last year.  My other favorite books of 2013 include THE 5TH WAVE by Rick Yancey (review), DARK TRIUMPH by Robin LaFevers (review), FIREBRAND by Gillian Phillip (review), JINX by Sage Blackwood (review), WHITE LINES by Jennifer Banash (review), and OUT OF THE EASY by Ruta Sepetys (review).

5.   Tell us one non-book-related thing that everyone reading your blog may not know about you.

See last year's answer.  My niece definitely inherited my laugh.  But since ya'll might remember that fact from last year, a new one is that I like to name my belongings.  The laptop I currently write IBWB on is called Brucie, after Batman's alter ego.

How about ya'll?  Feel free to share a fun fact about you or your blog in the comments!

    1. So many new-to-me blogs! It's amazing that so many people blog about books. I'd never find them on my own.

  5. You know, I never made it out to Houston much when we lived in Austin. Just once when my hubby ran in the marathon. My aunt and uncle just moved there with my cousin, so maybe one day we will go down again.

    1. It's a fun city, although I prefer Austin myself.

  6. My attention span usually doesn't last long enough to devote myself to a week-long community-wide online event, but even just reading through your introduction makes me think, Hey, this could be a good thing. Maybe I'll try next year. :) Also, I *definitely* need to check out In the Shadow of Blackbirds, why haven't I done it yet...

    1. I actually avoided doing Armchair BEA for years before jumping in last year. It turned out to be less time consuming than I thought, and was easier than normal blog networking.

It is *such* a good book.

  7. Ha ha, I bought Unstick because of Angie too! It's currently sitting on my desk near my computer so I don't forget to read it. ;)

I love that cover to In the Shadow of Blackbirds - I hadn't heard of it before but it looks a bit creepy (in that delicious way!). I'll have to look into your favourites list there.

    1. Angie, I think, is convincing the entire blogosphere to read UNSTICKY.

It is creepy in the most delicious of ways! I love it so, so much.

  8. I've heard lots of lovely things about 5th Wave. I'm eager to try it. And I just finished and enjoyed Dark Triumph too! Sounds like you've had a good reading year so far. I like to name my electronic devices. The iPad is called Shiny. So original :)

    1. Shiny is a good name, especially if you're a fan of Firefly.

  9. I love Houston, I used to live near Dallas, and I'll always have a soft spot for Houston and Austin. :-) Given the company on your best of list, I clearly need to get my butt in gear and read The Sweetest Dark and Firebrand! I love the other books you listed pretty fiercely, so I'm sure these will be good fits for me too. Great post, thanks for sharing! :-)

    1. Oh man, they're both so good. I hope you love them as much as the others.

(I used to live near Dallas myself!)

  10. Congratulations on the job! If your wish is to write for it, here's hoping you're able to soon :) My knowledge of Houston is limited to it being in Texas and perhaps being hot. Really interesting to hear about the food.

    1. Oh no, I prefer doing the editing to writing. I just find it funny that my job title doesn't really describe what I (or any of the technical writers at the company) do.

  11. Your best of list just increased my TBR pile. Sigh. :) I love day one of ABEA. So many new people to meet.

  12. Hi Liviana! Love that name; it's so original. I'm currently listening to The 5th Wave on audio and it's good. Thanks for visiting my blog.

Hmm, I bet that would be a good one for audio.

  14. I like the idea behind Armchair BEA, though I've never done it. A random fact about myself that a lot of people might not know. Hmm...I'm 22 (almost 23) and I don't drink alcohol. I probably have mentioned this on the blog before, but I don't talk about personal stuff a lot.

    1. Not a bad decision. I drink a little, but it's nothing I get much out of. I just like the taste of some drinks.
